If the Carrington Effect happens, life above ground will probably not be possible for awhile, possibly up to a year, depending on where one lives, maybe even longer.
Try not be within 100 miles of any nuclear facility, and do not be downwind of one and within 250 miles of one. To prepare, at the very least buy a Geiger Counter, with lots of batteries, because no one will tell you the radiation levels and what is safe or not safe. You will be completely on your own.
Part I
Part I above discusses basics such as what to bring, (little or nothing). It discusses Public shelters versus private shelters. Public shelters may be very hard to find, but it may pay to prepare ahead of time and look around to see if any of these public shelters are still around. Otherwise you are on your own, and may need to prepare your own private shelter.
Do not bring perishable food, as it will spoil and affect health. All Public shelters are prestocked and ready for two weeks inside. (this is probably no longer true.)

Public shelters stock water and food for 700 calories per day of food, and 2 quarts of water per person, per day.
In a home shelter, use hot water heater water, and toilet supply water to increase emergency water supply, if possible.
Rotate all food on regular basis. Stock at least a 2 week supply of canned and boxed food and water supply for family.
Use a chemical toilet in public shelters, plus hand germ sanitizer; Use an empty 15 gallon water drum or garbage can, underneath a chair with the seat hollowed out. Line the can or pail with a plastic bag. When full, seal lid and move to outside shelter if possible, or seal plastic bag and move waste outside periodically.

If available, sprinkle sawdust on human waste after every use. Bales of sawdust are available from feed and animal supply stores. Do not bring in dirt or sawdust unless it is sealed from outside air in containers. Wash containers outside to wash off radioactive dust.
Have natural anti bedbug or other insect vermin resources available for use. If someone passes over, carry body outside until it is safe to dig grave and bury person. Use mouse and rat traps baited with peanut butter to control vermin inside shelter. I would not use DDT as the video advises, but rather use natural, organic insect control methods.
Bread and other baked goods, even if moldy are still edible. Frozen vegetables even if soured are still ok, if well cooked. If a food tastes or smells too strange for you, do not eat it. Trim off spoiled sections of foods, cook well, and eat. Avoid chicken, pig or fish. After several hours, discard these if not refrigerated.
If a food can is opened and it bubbles, discard, even if it tastes ok, as it contains deadly bacteria.
Use emergency radio, or short wave radio to maintain contact with outside world.
Use a Geiger Counter to measure radioactivity. If the Geiger Counter is battery operated, use it very sparingly, to extend battery life.

A cheaper solution is to find a local cave or mine and make an agreement with the owner that in case of worst case scenario, you have a place ‘at the inn’.
