The US dropped leaflets across Japan, asking them to surrender or face the use of a horrible new weapon. The Japanese refused, thus giving the US at least some moral justification for using the nuclear bombs. Surrender did not happen after the first bomb was dropped, and it almost did not happen even after the second bomb was dropped. A military coup almost overthrew the Emperor after he surrendered to the USA unconditionally. 


The biggest difference between the massive carpet bombing and phosphorus bombing campaigns across Germany and the nuclear weapons used in Japan is that the effects of the nuclear weapons go on for many generations. 

After the military uses ‘ordinary’ bombs, they destroy buildings and kill people, but they do not leave toxic, genetically damaging residues that last for millions or even billions of years, killing and causing suffering for countless future generations. Now that we know this information, does it shift the ethical and moral justification around the use of nuclear bombs? 


We would suggest that the price paid by countless future generations is too high. All nuclear weapons should be dismantled and destroyed, because no war justifies the use of nuclear weapons that will end up destroying countless innocent future generations just from the residue left over from them.
