Fukushima Radioactivity Found In Bluefin Tuna

According to BBC News – Bluefin tuna record Fukushima radioactivity, Fukushima radiation has been found in all of the tuna tested of this species.

In the above video, all bluefin tuna tested in August of 2011 showed radioactive isotope contamination from Fukushima, in amounts of 10 Bq/kg of radioactive Cesium, two different isotopes. This is TEN TIMES the level found the year before, so we can assume the radioactive Cesium level was only 1 Bq/kg last year in these same fish.

They scientist that was interviewed claimed that radioactive Potassium 40 was found at levels 97% above that of other radioactive isotopes found, but that this radiation was ‘natural’ and has ALWAYS been there.

These fish were measured in August 2011, and since then, much more radiation contaminated water has been ‘leaked’ into the Pacific Ocean and there is more opportunity for radiation to move up the food chain into the top predators, such as bluefin tuna.

According to this same scientist, the fish arriving in 2012, may be lower in radiation best case, but no one has tested them yet. So no one knows that the radiation levels in fish will be.

On the other hand, these same fish are exposed to much more radioactive small fish for a much longer time, so their levels of radiation contamination in this same species of bluefin tuna may be much higher and they may even be a ‘public health hazard’ as of 2012.

Tuna are getting this radiation from the Pacific ocean waters that were contaminated both by air and water leaks from Fukushima. Here is a short video about how this radioactive contamination may be spreading through the ocean.

The scientist ends by saying that it is important that radiation measurements be made of tuna in 2012.

Dr. Michael Harbut, director of the Environmental Cancer Program at Wayne State University’s Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit said; “For somebody to say this is an immediate threat to large numbers of humans and their health is irresponsible,” Harbut said. “We don’t see people dying left and right all over the West Coast from radiation poisoning.
