The village leader who started this project demanded and got extraordinary safety measures, in the form of an expensive and super high wall. He had it built to protect the village from any future tsunamis. The elders and much of the public was opposed to this massive wall, thinking it was a waste of money.

Other villages also built anti tsunami walls, as did Fukushima nuclear power plant. Everyone knew that tsunamis regularly hit the coast of Japan throughout the ages. Everyone knew that these waves reached heights of 20 feet or more in some locations. But none of the other villages or nuclear power plants built walls this high. They all thought that 6 to 10 foot high walls would be ‘enough’. They were all wrong. This one village is the only one that made it through this natural disaster that happens on a regular historical basis. 

This small village located behind this huge fortress like seawall was the only one to make it through this disaster unscathed. This village serves to warn all of humanity and to teach a VERY important lesson.  It was only pure dumb luck that Fukushima and other nuclear power plants in Japan made it through the earthquake and the following tsunami disaster at all.

The lesson should be that all nuclear power plant safety and natural disaster prevention systems should be upgraded.

Lessons learned from Fukushima nuclear power plant FAILURES should also be addressed for future nuclear power plants (if any are built). Instead, what we are seeing is the NRC doing exactly the opposite. No lessons are being learned.

Nothing is being applied in terms of lessons learned from Fukushima to US nuclear plants, despite 21 of exactly the same Mark I faulty and bad engineering design operating here, close to major US cities. This is a major disaster waiting to happen… 

The NRC (now largely controlled by the nuclear industry) is moving to relax safety rules, stopping all safety inspections for re-licensing, reducing emergency evacuation drills and rules, and worse. The way they are acting is almost like someone preparing to commit planetary suicide.  

What does this NRC action in the USA to dismantle the safety net around nuclear power plants mean for public health and for local communities? The rough equivalent would that this small village of Wasura in Japan (with a huge wall to prevent tsunamis) would take down the entire floodwall that protected them from the tsunami, dismantle the flood gates and destroy all records of any historical tsunami events. Does this make any logical sense at all? 

The ONLY way that the NRC actions make any sense is if one looks at this from a short term corporate profit point of view. When a corporation looks at the bottom line of profits, it does this WITHOUT looking at long term risks. 

ANY corporation only wants and focuses on very short term time spans and bottom line profits. This focus on profits THIS YEAR drives all of their decisions. The furthest out that any corporations view is five (5) years into the future. Beyond that, they do not care what happens or what risks there are to the public or to the world in general. Who cares if their decision today will result in a global life extinction event? As long as profits are there this year, that is all that matters.

So if a local community or some citizen activists comes to a corporation and asks them to spend XX dollars to improve safety or to address a natural disaster that occurs every 50-200 years, what typically happens?

The corporations dismiss this safety viewpoint and attack the person, activist group or community wanting it. The whistle blower or safety expert is often personally attacked in the press, by nuclear industry ‘experts’, and thus summarily gotten rid of.

The underlying safety, health or environmental problems remain, and are NOT addressed or taken care of. So what are the problems being pointed at by health, safety and environmental experts who are trying to prevent your family from getting sick, dying or being forced to leave their homes with no compensation?
