There are now numerous independent scientific studies that confirm that children living near nuclear reactors have much higher cancer rates, stillborn babies, birth defect rates and other problems, such as an increase in the 2,000 genetically linked diseases, such as Down’s Syndrome, Spinabifida, and other chromosomal abnormalities passed on to future generations.
In one case–control study of cancer among children less than 5 years of age, it was found that living within 5 kilometers of a nuclear facility was associated with a 61% increased incidence of all cancer, according to Spix, et al, in 2008. (Spix et al. 2008)
In a study in 2008, Kaatsch and associated researchers found a 119% excess risk of leukemia for children living close to nuclear power reactors. (Kaatsch et al. 2008a) […]
In 2012, French researchers confirmed that childhood leukemia rates are greatly elevated among children living near nuclear power plants. The January 2012 International Journal of Cancer published the study, Childhood Leukemia Around French Nuclear Power Plants — the Geocap Study 2002-2007.
In a U.S. University Study, a 23% higher incidence of childhood leukemia within 16 km of nuclear facilities was found in children.
In a German government study, scientists found that children living near nuclear plants have 100% more leukemia rates, and a high incidence of solid cancers, if they live near nuclear reactors.

is the founder and chairman of the Department of Medical Genetics and Birth Defects Center of the University of South Alabama, in the U.S.
Prior to his training in Medical Genetics at Harvard University Medical School, Dr. Wertelecki trained in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Washington University. Later, he served as Senior Surgeon, U.S. Public Health Commission Corps at the Epidemiology Branch of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Wertelecki is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and member of the Academy of Pediatrics, and since 1994, he has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the World Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects http://www.world-alliance.org/

Why would there be a huge increases in cancers and genetic diseases in children around nuclear power plants? Contrary to what the nuclear industry claims, nuclear reactors release invisible, poisonous, cancer causing substances on a constant basis, both into the air and drinking water.
The ‘venting’ towers on EVERY nuclear facility release radioactive gases into the air, which then blows downwind with the wind. Cooling water going through nuclear power plants absorbs radioactive substances released via that route, as well as through leaks and accidental ‘spills’.

The pro nuclear apologists will point at their own ‘studies’, which seem to ‘prove’ that low dose radiation is safe. However, the foundatoins that they base their studies on are totally flawed and wrong. These supposed ‘experts’ assign values from exterior radiation to internal radiation exposure, which cannot be done, as they operate by totally different mechanisms. It is like trying to compare fish breathing air with humans breathing underwater, like fish.
These ‘experts’ also use a bag of water to calculate harm caused by internal radiation, when a totally different mechanism is at work with low dose radiation. These assumptions make the apologists studies completely worthless and useless.
On 12/28/2011, NHK reported ICRP’s [International Commission on Radiological Protection] manipulation and ‘fake’ scientific data in the late 1980’s.
In this TV news show, NHK reported that ICRP manipulated the actual nuclear radiation safety data for purely political reasons, in order to make nuclear power look ‘safe’. The ICRP standard is known as a false or fake “science”, which the experts make up in order to make nuclear power appear to be safe. In reality, cancer rates go up even if the exposure is only 10mSv. The ICRP says that dose is ‘safe’ and will cause no harm. Of course, this study is only pointed at by pro nuclear industry aligned ‘experts’, since it supports the nuclear industry and reduces legal liability.
For example, after Chernobyl, the cancer rate in Sweden has gone up, way beyond the estimation of ICRP prediction. In one area of Sweden, where low dose radiation has affected residents due to Chernobyl, the cancer rate is increasing. The annual radiation dose is only 0.2 mSv, which is 1/5 of the minimum ICRP standard that can cause harm according to them. According to researchers, the cancer risk of those exposed to only .2 mSv has increased by 34% annually.
