The tragic shooting in Newtown, Conneticut may serve as a wake up call… This mass murder is yet another opportunity to learn something. Will people learn and take some form of action? Time will tell. What are some of the ROOT causes of these mass shootings? Here are a few suggestions.
The NRA believes that the cause of the mass murder in Newtown is a LACK of enough guns. They are calling for MORE guns, not less, as the solution to this problem. They blame everyone and everything except for guns.
The NRA advocates for more guns in schools and armed guards stationed at each school in the nation. Not to mention that this ‘solution’ would be very expensive in this time of budget cuts and teacher, police, firefighter layoffs, it also does not work. The Columbine school had TWO armed guards that confronted the two shooters there, and that did not stop those mass murderers.

Other people believe that the mass media is to blame, by exposing kids to violent images, sound effects and promoting a culture of making violence and killing normal.
By the time a child is a teen, he or she has seen and/or heard about thousands to tens of thousands of people killed or tortured on mass media TV. The news features unending wars, where millions of people have died and where countless numbers of innocent children were slaughtered by all sides.
Another cause of violence may be that our young teens are sent off to battle around the world in 700 military bases globally. But then they are forgotten and ignored once they come back home, with lots of problems, a tendency to commit violence, and suffering from lots of PTSD.

Another root cause of mass murderers may be that the mass media tends to cover minor incidents like this mass murder with continuous LIVE coverage. It is a well known fact that many criminals and mentally deranged individuals are seeking to become ‘heroes’ by committing mass murder and gaining notoriety in prison or after their death by committing some heinous act, which they KNOW will be covered non stop in the mass media for weeks, if not months after the act. They know that their name will live on forever, if they commit some crime that kills dozens of people or more.
The mass media obliges these deranged killers, who are often white young males. The corporate controlled mass media raises these criminals to cult hero status, with round the clock live coverage after they commit some horrible crime. But the same corporate media, avoids most coverage of gang related killings that happen every night in every major city, and they avoid corporate crimes, deception, or fraud. If corporate crime is covered, it is given only (non live) coverage and short news slots with quick sound bites.
Now other mass murder wannabe’s can imitate those given weeks of live coverage, so they do. The imitators may even try to top the original mass murderers with an even more horrible media event, so they too, can become ‘famous’, such as this incident. The mass media keeps reporting each of these mass murder incidents, traumatizing countless millions of children and adults day after day after day, with images of death, suffering and death, while training others mass murderers about HOW to commit the same crime.
If and when these killers are caught, they are sentenced to jail for long periods, with no hope or chance at rehabilitation. These killers are thrown in together with those suffering from mental health problems, plus minor drug offenders from the failed anti drug war. This may be another root cause of our violent society, which seems to growing more violent over time.

Once in jail, master criminals teach everyone else how to become a better criminal, and/or killers. Once these criminals are released, which most of them are, they are set loose on society, with little or no hope of reintegration, so the odds are high they will re-offend. Strict punishment for low level offenders such as teens or grandmothers smoking pot is the rule, but corporate criminals stealing Billions of Dollars are never even charged in almost all cases.

Another root cause of mass murderers may be that our society is providing easy to get weapons, that even mentally ill people can get their hands on without any checks or controls, via such routes as gun shows or private person to person sales, where no ID is necessary, no background checks are done and ANYONE can buy weapons and ammo of all kinds. Over 40% of all guns sold, are acquired at gun shows or by private seller/buyer transactions. What is the use of a background check at a retail gun store when about 50% of all gun sales are completely unregulated?
Even when the mentally ill ask for help, there is none to be had, because supposedly it costs too much. These individuals end up with no treatment, and no help. Many of these untreated mentally ill individuals end up committing violence of some kind. Once these mentally ill individuals burn down a building or shoot up a theatre full of people, then they get free help for life, including all of the mental health treatments that they were asking for, BEFORE they committed some violent act.
Weapons of mass destruction such as assault rifles that have NOTHING to do with hunting are legal and sold to just about anyone, along with huge drum magazines that contain one hundred hollow point bullets each. These magazines can be swapped out in a matter of seconds. Hollow point or specially treated bullets can also be bought just about anywhere. These types of bullets and magazines are designed for war, not for hunting.
The police in New York actually stopped supporting the NRA over this issue, because the NRA would not support banning certain kinds of bullets that can pierce bullet proof vests worn by police.
Just about any assault weapons can easily be modified to be automatic, thus shooting off and killing huge numbers of people in a just a few seconds, whether that is in mall, school, kindergarten, movie theatre, or any other place where large numbers of people gather. During gun shows, even a convicted serial killer can purchase whatever he wants, if he has the money. Even fake ID will work at a gun show or with a private seller…just bring $$.
The USA leads the world in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction, including land mines, depleted uranium (DU) weapons, phosphorus bombs, cluster bombs and other illegal weapons banned by most other civilized countries.
The US constantly votes in international forums such as the UN to BLOCK all efforts to stop these weapons from being manufactured, exported and used, because it is part of the military industrial sociopathic corporate profit structure. The US is the largest exporter of death on the planet, using illegal weapons of mass destruction around the world, such as DU weapons. Why is it that to drive a car (that can kill a few people) everyone that wants to drive must take a class and get a license that must be renewed with tests, plus the car must be inspected and tested regularly? Each car must be insured, so if any harm comes to others, insurance is there to cover the loss. Drivers learning permits are issued and tests must be passed to drive a car that can kill only a few people. Annual fees must be paid for EACH car, and fines must be paid if they are not paid. A driver’s license can be lost if rules are not followed. The privilege of driving a car can be lost if someone drives drunk. This is as it should be.
So why can any individual buy and own a weapon of war plus unlimited amounts of armor piercing ammo and magazines holding 100 rounds that explode on impact, without any classes, no permit and no mental, or other qualifications, plus no follow up inspections, tests or qualifications, even if that person becomes mentally unstable or violent? No insurance is required to own even ONE weapon that can kill many more people than a car, and cause tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. An assault weapon of war can kill tens, hundreds, possibly thousands of people in the right setting, but no license is needed. No tests are taken. No fees are collected yearly. Is it any wonder our gun related homicide rate is the HIGHEST IN THE WORLD?

Of the world’s 23 “rich” countries, the U.S. gun-related murder rate is almost 20 times that of the other 22 civilized countries. Japan experienced only 11 homicides, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. Having a gun in the home is much more likely to cause the death of a family member and probably a young child or teen, than it is to stop a burglar. The guns themselves are a target for stealing by criminals, who desire guns.
Adam Lanza, the Newtown shooter, was trained by his mother at gun ranges in how to use a weapon. His mother had six guns in the house. She was shot in the head four times by her mentally unbalanced son, who used her own guns and ammo against her. He then went out and shot over 20 people, most of them 3-6 times each. Having one or more guns in the house is much more likely to result in the death of family member, than it is to prevent a criminal from doing something.
“Dr. Kellermann MD, states that as an emergency room doctor, he noted that the number of gunowners injured by their own gun or that of a family member seemed to greatly outnumber the number of intruders shot by the gun of a homeowner, and therefore he determined to study whether or not this was in fact true.
In his first publication on the subject, in 1986, Kellermann studied all gunshot related deaths in Seattle over six years, and found that:
54% of firearm-related deaths occurred in the home where the gun was kept
70.5% of these (firearm-related deaths in the home where the gun was kept) involved handguns
0.5% of these (firearm-related deaths in the home where the gun was kept) involved an intruder shot while attempting entry
1.8% of these (firearm-related deaths in the home where the gun was kept) were judged by police as self-defense
there were 1.3 times as many accidental firearm-related deaths in the home where the gun was kept as self-protection shootings
there were 4.6 times as many criminal firearm-related homicides in the home where the gun was kept as self-protection shootings
there were 37 times as many suicides in the home where the gun was kept as self-protection shootings
He concluded that “the advisability of keeping firearms in the home for protection must be questioned”.[8]
Another root cause of mass murders may be that violence, power, threats, assassinations, torture and death are the ONLY ‘solutions’ to problems provided by most mass media movies, TV and newspapers, plus right wing pundits and newscasters (all of them owned by huge corporations, whose motive is purely profit.)
Non violent, peaceful, cooperative methods of communication are squashed, made fun of and ignored for the most part. Partisanship and personal ad hominum attacks including threats to life and health are encouraged and greatly used by shock jocks, most of them of the ‘right’ political persuasion, but not exclusively.
Now add video games and virtual realities where those same innocent and impressionable kids can be desensitized to using guns, killing people and seeing blood/gore.
Today’s violent video games are so ultra-realistic and bloody that they are essentially mass-murder training simulations for children. They are almost universally played by young males, and Adam Lanza, the Newtown shooter, was also a player of these killing video games:
Now add schools where bullying is the norm as another potential root cause of violence and mass murderers. Protection from violence of all kinds; mental, emotional, spiritual and physical is non existent in many schools. Violence of all kinds is allowed, condoned and possibly even encouraged in most schools. School counselors are usually the first to be cut, along with the creative arts teachers, both of which have been shown to deal with root causes of violent acting out by kids.
Adam Lanza was an Anarchist, according to the above Facebook page. This belief system is supportive of destroying everything and killing large numbers of people. Why didn’t Adam get help for this? Why did his mother train him in how to use guns and help him to become a skilled marksman? Giving an Anarchist access to guns and ammo is like pouring gasoline on a fire and then throwing lit matches on top. The outcome is not in question, as it is just a question of when, not if.
Another root cause of mass murderers may be mind altering drugs, that promote violence in children, suicidal behaviour, and anger as side effects. The number of kids and teens on prescription drugs is escalating each year, and the violence seems to be growing worse each year.

The military is all about guns, killing, death and destruction; all non life affirming things. But their year by year increasing budget is hallowed ground, and cannot be touched. Actually the military industrial budget is still increasing even in these desperate financial times.
However, all other budgets for such things as nutrition, art, fire fighting, parks, schools, roads, and other ‘evil’ government services has to be cut. This is an insane way to run a country. Promoting death, torture and jail, while slashing everything else that is noble, life affirming and uplifting is insanity in action. We have to be careful what we think about, because we CREATE this reality for ourselves and our community. Thinking about, creating and promoting VIOLENCE, creates more violence. This is a spiritual law. Is it any wonder that a town that seems to be based on promoting violence for profit, experiences that violence personally?

Notwithstanding all of the previous items, we can create a positive, spiritual, life affirming world, free of violence. We do not have to allow our society to be taken over by those who have only selfish, self centered, greedy, profit motivated reasons in mind. But that takes standing up, speaking out and VOTING for those who stand for life affirming things, rather than the opposite. The basic question is one of promoting and following love, or promoting and following fear.
The path forward is rather easy actually. Follow whatever feels good in the belly and heart, and stop doing or promoting what does NOT feel food in the belly and heart. In other words, follow your bliss. Also, ask the question; what works for seven future generations?
If the answer is that what you are doing is NOT based on heart based actions, and it is not good for seven future generations of YOUR CHILDREN, stop doing whatever that is, and switch to something that is coming from the heart, and DOES WORK for seven future generations. Start supporting people who meet this definition of doing things with seven future generations in mind, such as the Green Party.
