CIA Lost A Plutonium Spying Device In Nanda Devi; Contaminating The Ganges River

“At some point during the inhumanly cold Himalayan winter straddling 1965 and 1966, a peculiar collection of box-shaped objects one sprouting a six-foot, insect-like antenna plummets nine thousand feet down the sheer flanks of a remote peak. Ripped from its moorings by an avalanche, the jumbled apparatus slides down a funnel-shaped hourglass of hard snow and shoots over a black cliff band, careening a vertical distance six times the height of the Empire State building.

The boxes come to rest on the glacier at the mountain’s base. One, an olive-drab casing the size of a personal computer, begins to sink. Then, trailing a robotic dogtail of torn wires, it slowly burns through the snow, melting into solid blue glacial ice, eventually disappearing beneath the surface, and never seen again.
No one actually witnessed this event. But as you read these words, nearly four pounds of plutonium locked in the glacier’s dark unknowable heart are almost certainly moving ever closer to the source of the Ganges River.
Eye at the Top of the World, provides a harrowing present-day account of Takeda’s expedition to solve the mystery of Nanda Devi.”
In the two Indian language videos below, the same incident is described…

In 1965, a CIA team lost a four pound plutonium-powered device at Nanda Devi peak which it was trying to install to spy on China’s nuclear tests. The CIA paid some climbers to put a plutonium powered top secret spying device on top of a mountain in the Himalayas.

This device was supposed to be used to spy on Communist China. Out of the two plutonium devices placed on peaks, at least one was lost, eaten by an avalanche or it was stolen.

This lost batch of plutonium may soon come back to haunt the USA, through a Pakistani terror network that may have retrieved this plutonium. Because it is still out there, terrorists may still be able to acquire if it was just lost. If the plutonium was lost, this plutonium has thousands of curies of radiation, enough to contaminate the Ganges river into which the Himalayas drain.

A climber who heard about this story went up to this same mountain and sent some river sediment samples from below this mountain off to a lab. The US lab said that the radiation counts were “above expected levels” for river sediment.
