25 Interesting Things About Memorial Day

TRADITIONAL OBSERVANCES

On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon.[43] It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.[44] The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.
In 1915, following the Second Battle of Ypres, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a physician with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, wrote the poem, “In Flanders Fields“. Its opening lines refer to the fields of poppies that grew among the soldiers’ graves in Flanders.
In 1918, inspired by the poem, YWCA worker Moina Michael attended a YWCA Overseas War Secretaries’ conference wearing a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed over two dozen more to others present. In 1920, the National American Legion adopted it as their official symbol of remembrance.[47]

POEM: IN FLANDERS FIELDS

Wikipedia; “The first chapter of In Flanders Fields and Other Poems, a 1919 collection of McCrae’s works, gives the text of the poem as follows:[9]

A page from a book. The first stanza of the poem is printed above an illustration of a white cross amidst a field of red poppies while two cannons fire in the background.
Illustrated page by Ernest Clegg.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

McCrae fought in the second battle of Ypres in the Flanders region of Belgium where the German army launched one of the first chemical attacks in the history of war. They attacked the Canadian position with chlorine gas on April 22, 1915, but were unable to break through the Canadian line, which held for over two weeks. In a letter written to his mother, McCrae described the battle as a “nightmare”: “For seventeen days and seventeen nights none of us have had our clothes off, nor our boots even, except occasionally. In all that time while I was awake, gunfire and rifle fire never ceased for sixty seconds…. And behind it all was the constant background of the sights of the dead, the wounded, the maimed, and a terrible anxiety lest the line should give way.”[7] Alexis Helmer, a close friend, was killed during the battle on May 2.
McCrae performed the burial service himself, at which time he noted how poppies quickly grew around the graves of those who died at Ypres. The next day, he composed the poem while sitting in the back of an ambulance[8] at an Advanced Dressing Station outside Ypres. This location is today known as the John McCrae Memorial Site.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF HONORING VETERANS?

When someone gives their life for some cause that is noble and selfless, they deserve to be honored. But what makes Memoria Day and the subject of honor within it much more muddy than clear, is the fact that many veterans gave their lives for wars that were started illegally, or as false flag events, and the wars were motivated more by profit for corporations, than for freedom or spreading democracy..

Are all veterans participating in those fake, illegal, false flag initiated wars deserving of honor?
Do the people who started those illegal, profit motivated and immoral wars deserve honor, or something else?
Other questions may arise as a result of asking these questions…
These questions and more like them, deserve to be thought about and talked about on this sacred day of honoring and remembrance, because if ANY precious sons, fathers, cousins, brothers, sisters, mothers and other veterans are fighting and dying in vain, or for profit motivated reasons only, is that really worth celebrating?

WAR HAS BEEN ABOLISHED INTERNATIONALLY; WHY ARE THERE STILL STANDING ARMIES AND BATTLES?

Maybe the best way of celebrating veterans sacrifices is to make sure that there are no more wars, and to prevent wars in the first place. How can we make that happen? War has been abolished; why is the US still fighting and starting wars?
