Award-Winning U.S. Diplomat Resigns With Scathing Letter To Tillerson And Trump Administration

An award-winning U.S. diplomat who was seen as a rising star at the State Department has resigned, leaving behind a fiery letter to Secretary Of State Rex Tillerson which notes the “stinging disrespect” the Trump administration had shown diplomatic corps.

Elizabeth Shackelford, who served as a political officer based in Nairobi for the U.S. mission to Somalia, noted that Tillerson and the Trump administration undercut the State Department and damaged America’s influence in the world, according to Foreign Policy.

She wrote to Tillerson to say that she had reluctantly decided to resign because the Trump administration had abandoned human rights as a priority and has shown disdain for the State Department’s diplomatic work, according to the letter obtained by Foreign Policy.
