Back in the good old days, people would never dare to raise their voices against any church or priest, because church leaders were historically and in many cases are still considered today to be infallible, incorruptible, incapable of doing harm to anyone, and equal to God himself. No one can challenge God, and God has no flaws. So if anyone talked about sex abuse, whether they were nuns or teens or children, they were immediately shunned and possibly even kicked out of the church, which would equal the crime and punishment dealt out to those who committed heresy.
There has been progress over the long arc of history. Instead of being totally ignored and disbelieved, sexual crimes are now reported, here and there in isolated cases, while avoiding the total picture and global framework. Some of these crimes are even pursued in court, with varying degrees of success.
