Hot towers are strong indicators that a tropical cyclone is growing. In fact, many scientists feel that hot towers are the indication of intense, rapid growth.
They are typically associated with extreme amounts of lightning.
A 2004 paper written by NASA researchers and published in the American Geophysical Union journal Geophysical Research Letters explained that a tropical cyclone with at least one hot tower is twice as likely to experience rapid intensification as opposed to one without a hot tower.
