As always, the cruelty is the point. Trump’s effort to “crack down” on homelessness is about invisibilizing people he deems to be a burden—and punishing Democratic policymakers in states with large homeless populations because of their “liberal policies.”
In order to make actual change, we must listen to what housing advocates have been saying for decades: affordable, stable housing is the solution to homelessness. The administration’s policies to cut food stamps, erode health care, and terrorize marginalized communities are just making it worse.
People experiencing homelessness need resources, but Trump’s plan doesn’t cut it. We need real solutions.
