Pfizer, Merck, and Swiss pharmaceutical Roche Holding AG have made the most progress in developing the first antiviral pill to treat or prevent COVID-19. To date, the only approved antiviral treatment for COVID-19 in the U.S. is Gilead Science Inc’s. intravenous drug Veklury (remdesivir). Roche and its partner, Atea Pharmaceuticals in June said that early data from the trial of their experimental oral antiviral, AT-527, showed that it lowered the viral load in hospitalized patients.
