In recent weeks, the leaders of the EU’s three largest countries by population – France, Germany and Italy – have come out in favour of negotiations between Kiev and Moscow as a way to end the fighting in Ukraine.

In contrast to President Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since Russia began the ‘special operation’ in Ukraine on 24 February. Contrary to mainstream media reports, the fissures in the misnamed EU ‘bloc’ are more than evident.
