As Pacific sardine collapse worsens, scientists worry about ecosystem ripple | OregonLive.com

Nearly a year into a West Coast sardine fishing ban enacted to protect the collapsing population, the fish formerly worth more than $8 million to Oregon’s economy have shown no signs of a comeback.New federal research indicates numbers of the small, silvery, schooling fish have plummeted further than before the fishing moratorium, dashing any hope of lifting it in 2016.

The last fire which we found at Savannah River Nuclear Site (South Carolina) was in H area on August 7th. Three new fires have appeared on the US government fire map, on August 16th, 17th, and 18th. Having just started monitoring over the last couple of weeks, we are left with the impression that these unreported fires must be frequent at the Savannah River Nuclear Site, at least in the hotter months.

On Wednesday, 17Aug2016, CNN did something that NO other network will do…they gave an outlet to alternative candidates….first it was the Libertarians and Johnson and now it was Stein of the Green Party…..below is an op-ed on the subject…….Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and vice presidential candidate Ajamu Baraka took part in CNN’s first Green Party town hall Wednesday night, laying out their proposals to abolish all student debt, establish a single-payer healthcare system, create a foreign policy based on humanitarian values, and to establish a “Green New Deal” that would both create millions of jobs nationwide and help transition the country to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.

Tell the Census Bureau: End prison-based gerrymandering now | CREDO Action

The U.S. Census Bureau just released guidelines for the 2020 census that harm people of color and exacerbate the suffering of the communities most devastated by America’s broken criminal justice system.1Despite massive public opposition, the Census Bureau wants to continue its widely discredited practice of “prison-based gerrymandering.” Prison-based gerrymandering counts incarcerated people as “residents” of the place they happen to be on Census Day. That means instead of being counted as residents of their home communities, they are counted as residents of the community where they are imprisoned.

America’s Forgotten War – In Saner Thought

we have de-fanged Al-Qaeda and the Taleban can only operate one region at a time without massive losses…..just what was our objective in Afghanistan…..the boss of the group that did the 9/11 attacks is dead…dead….dead…..Afghanistan is a money pit…..do you know what that is?  A hole in the earth into which you pour money. What the US needs is a way out of this quagmire, right? The failure of U.S. policy in Afghanistan has been obvious for years, but neither President Bush nor President Obama wanted the defeat hung on them, so the bloody folly goes on, a test for the next president, says Alon Ben-Meir.Two weeks ago, President Obama announced that the U.S. will draw down its troops in Afghanistan from 9,800 to 8,400, altering his original plan to reduce the number to 5,500. His decision suggests that conditions on the ground are not as promising as he expected them to be, and maintaining a larger number of troops is important as he believes “it is in our national security interests … that we give our Afghan partners the best opportunities to succeed.”The President, however, did not spell out what success actually means.

Emeritus Professor Smythe vs Glasgow University (with the link!) | Cumbria Trust

Professor Smythe is one of the few academics who has dared to speak out about the misuse of science – in particular the attempt to distort the debate over burial of nuclear waste in Cumbria and airbrush inconvenient facts out of history.  He has also spoken out about fracking and the malign effect of the fracking industry’s financial support of universities.Within days of publishing a paper critical of fracking in January 2016, Glasgow University attempted to silence him by removing his access to the academic database upon which Professor Smythe relies.  If members of Glasgow University disagree with his views, the correct approach would be to challenge that paper.  Open debate is fundamental to good decision-making and science must always be open to challenge.  Glasgow University and its corporate backers  cannot be allowed to control the debate on fracking or any other subject by silencing dissenting views.Edinburgh Court of SessionThe new target is £25,000.  That should be sufficient to take the case before the Court of Session in Edinburgh with Professor Smythe being represented by Sir Crispin Agnew QC.

Obama: From Peace Prize to World’s Biggest Arms Dealer in 8 Short Years

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of more military equipment, valued at around $1.15 billion USD, to the oil-rich kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This sounds like a lot of money to most of us, but the most frightening aspect of the sale is that it represents a continuation of an arms-dealing relationship between Washington and the Saudi regime, which has been worth over $50 billion USD in arms sales to date.It is not an understatement to say Obama’s tears over gun violence are disingenuous considering his administration has enacted a policy of systematically arming the entire world with all manner of warcraft. According to the Department of Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), during his first six years in office, the Obama administration entered into agreements to sell more than $190 billion USD in weaponry worldwide. As the director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, William D. Hartung, states, this figure is higher than any U.S. administration since World War II. Perhaps that is why the Nobel secretary has voiced serious regrets about awarding the Peace Prize to the president.

It’s Time to Fire the DEA | Drug Policy Alliance

The DEA was created in 1973 to enforce federal drug laws. The results have been devastating: wasted resources, mass incarceration, racial disparities, civil rights violations and scandal after scandal. Treating drug use as a criminal justice issue instead of a health issue has led to disaster. Yet Congress has rarely scrutinized the agency, its actions or its budget.

Protest of Boeing Santa Susana Field Lab tour leads to potential discovery of new contamination – EnviroReporter.com

This astonishing drop-off of lab tour attendees came after the continuing protests and EnviroReporter.com’s July 13 exposé Critics question safety of Boeing’s Santa Susana Field Lab hikes. That investigation revealed that hikers and bus riders are being allowed in areas that have thousands of times the normal amount of radiation including cesium-137 and strontium-90 as well as chemicals, PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. One of the August 6 demonstrators even found what appeared to be carelessly left contamination near the gates of SSFL. A long pipe running from Woolsey Canyon Road towards the lab entrance was pointed out to this reporter by “Wild Bill” Bowling, a Runkle Canyon Radiation Ranger and founder of the Aerospace Contamination Museum of Education as being stuffed with toxic foam goo.

Save loads with homemade laundry detergent – AOL

First, take one bar of natural soap (like castile or a gentle glycerin soap) and finely grate it with a cheese grater. Then, take the soap flakes and sprinkle in one cup of washing soda and one cup of borax, sealing your new cleaning concoction in an airtight container. When it’s laundry time, mix in about 1-2 tablespoons per load. It doesn’t take much with this concentrated material — one batch of super-soap can get you through 40-50 loads.

On the 140th anniversary of Custer’s well-remembered demise, why is California genocide forgotten?

Practically unknown, meanwhile, is the extended massacre of California Indians in which 100,000 of the state’s indigenous inhabitants died at the hands of vigilantes and militias in the first few years of statehood. Less than a handful of books have been written about that slaughter. And no movies.

This was on top of the slaughter wrought by the Mission system in which, starting in 1769, California Indians were pressed into service (of the Spanish friars who came to convert them to Catholicism), worked to death, recaptured or sometimes murdered when they ran away, raped by the Missions’ military squads, and killed off in great numbers by diseases they picked up from the invaders.

Helen Caldecott: “America Still Thinks It Can Win a Nuclear War”

And as if all those mega-stockpiles of bombs we have now aren’t enough, “the government is currently planning to spend one trillion dollars more on replacing every single bomb, tank and missile we own.”And if that’s not scary enough for ya, America still thinks it can fight and win a nuclear war.  No no no and no!  The powers that be think that dropping 100 nuclear bombs on 100 cities will win the current war-de-jour for us.  “But all that will do is end life on earth.”And the most scary part of all is that, “It could happen tonight.  It could happen right now.  We are closer now to nuclear annihilation than ever, even closer than we were during the Cold War.  North Korea and Iran cannot end the world.  But the sociopaths in charge of our nuclear weapons can.  For instance, Clinton has never seen a war that she doesn’t like.”

Study shows wood windows are cooler than glass

The transparent wood lets through just a little bit less light than glass, but a lot less heat, said Tian Li, the lead author of the new study. “It is very transparent, but still allows for a little bit of privacy because it is not completely see-through. We also learned that the channels in the wood transmit light with wavelengths around the range of the wavelengths of visible light, but that it blocks the wavelengths that carry mostly heat,” said Li.The team’s findings were derived, in part, from tests on tiny model house with a transparent wood panel in the ceiling that the team built. The tests showed that the light was more evenly distributed around a space with a transparent wood roof than a glass roof.

GMO ban expands in Russia as Putin halts all production and imports

Russia has adopted a new law that prohibits all GMO crop cultivation and GMO animal breeding in the Russian Federation, to prevent the release of GMOs into the environment. Furthermore, the new law allows the Russian government to restrict the import of GMO products that may pose a threat to human health or the environment. In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the Russian Parliament that the country should become the world’s largest supplier of organic foods. Later that year, Russia enforced a law that required strict labeling of products that contain GMOs, while the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich announced that Russia would not use genetically modified organisms to increase productivity in agriculture.

For real progressives, Jill Stein is now the only choice | Marc Lamont Hill | Opinion | The Guardian

The stakes of Wednesday night’s CNN Green party town hall were high – third-party candidates are rarely allowed entry into the corporate media universe, which thrives on the false narrative that only two parties exist here in the United States.

This was perhaps the only opportunity the presidential candidate I have endorsed – Jill Stein – and her running mate, Ajamu Baraka, to have the ear of a large portion of the mainstream American electorate. There was little room for erro

The Most Revolutionary Act

In a stunning turn of events, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday it will no longer use private prisons to incarcerate federal prisoners, deeming the notorious for-profit facilities both less safe and less effective in providing correctional services than those operated by the government.

“They simply do not provide the same level of correctional services, programs, and resources; they do not save substantially on costs; and as noted in a recent report by the Department’s Office of Inspector General, they do not maintain the same level of safety and security,” Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates explained in today’s announcement.

In Scathing Review, EPA’s Science Advisors Tell Agency Not to Downplay Fracking-Related Water Contamination | DeSmogBlog

On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency’s scientific advisors finished their review of EPA’s national study on fracking and sternly rebuked the EPA for claiming that its draft study had found no evidence of “widespread, systemic” impacts to drinking water. The EPA had not provided the evidence to support that claim, the Science Advisory Board (SAB) peer review panel found. The phrase was widely quoted in the press, but appeared only in a press release and the Executive Summary of EPA’s draft study of the impacts of fracking on drinking water.Environmentalists challenged EPA’s summary of the data, arguing that the agency’s conclusion wrongly ignored the thousands of spills, leaks, and other problems described in the body of the draft report.

Still sick 25 years after Gulf War, a veteran seeks answers – StarTribune.com

Chad Donovan of Rochester is fighting for the Department of Veterans Affairs to acknowledge his pain and other symptoms as related to Gulf War Illness.

It’s been 25 years, and Chad Donovan still wonders which toxic hazard in the Gulf War might have caused the fatigue, stomach problems and rashes he has suffered ever since.Maybe it was the nerve gas pills, which his unit took in Saudi Arabia while standing in formation so nobody refused.

Maybe one of the “false alarms” after a missile attack really did signal the presence of chemical weapons.Maybe the mushroom-cloud detonation of unused Iraqi ordnance whooshed toxins into the air.

Volunteering in the U.S. hit a new low last year, according to the Labor Department. As of September 2013, 25.4 percent of all Americans 16 and older had volunteered with an organization at least once in the prior year, according to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is the lowest rate of volunteering the annual report has found since it was first conducted in 2002, and the latest year-over-year change is statistically significant, according to a BLS economist.

I Know Trump’s New Campaign Chairman, Steve Bannon. Here’s What You Need To Know. | Daily Wire

Under Bannon’s Leadership, Breitbart Openly Embraced The White Supremacist Alt-Right.

Andrew Breitbart despised racism. Truly despised it. He used to brag regularly about helping to integrate his fraternity at Tulane University. He insisted that racial stories be treated with special care to avoid even the whiff of racism. With Bannon embracing Trump, all that changed.

Now Breitbart has become the alt-right go-to website, with Yiannopoulos pushing white ethno-nationalism as a legitimate response to political correctness, and the comment section turning into a cesspool for white supremacist mememakers.

5 takeaways from Trump’s pick of Breitbart exec as campaign CEO | TheHill

Trump’s desire to control the media narrative surrounding his campaign can also be seen in his decision to get counsel from former Fox News executive Roger Ailes, who helped turn the conservative media outlet into a juggernaut but was chased from the company only weeks ago amid allegations of sexual harassment.Bannon and Ailes could help Trump keep a tighter grip on media coverage of his campaign in the short-term — and will likely seek to make much of the story about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, a frequent target for Breitbart and Fox. At the same time, the decision is also provoking questions about whether Trump is thinking beyond the presidential race.GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak and former Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro have questioned whether Trump’s association with Bannon is a sign that he’s thinking about launching a conservative news empire after the election.

Seymour Hersh Says Clinton Approved Sending Libya’s Sarin to Syrian Terrorists | Uprootedpalestinians’s Blog

The interviewer asked why Obama is so obsessed to replace Assad in Syria, since «The power vacuum that would ensue would open Syria up to all kinds of jihadi groups»; and Hersh replied that not only he, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff, «nobody could figure out why». He said, «Our policy has always been against him [Assad]. Period». This has actually been the case not only since the Party that Assad leads, the Ba’ath Party, was the subject of a shelved CIA coup-plot in 1957 to overthrow and replace it; but, actually, the CIA’s first coup had been not just planned but was carried out in 1949 in Syria, overthrowing there a democratically elected leader, in order to enable a pipeline for the Sauds’ oil to become built through Syria into the largest oil market, Europe; and, construction of the pipeline started the following year. But, there were then a succession of Syrian coups (domestic instead of by foreign powers – 1954, 1963, 1966, and, finally, in 1970), concluding in the accession to power of Hafez al-Assad during the 1970 coup. And, the Sauds’ long-planned Trans-Arabia Pipeline has still not been built. The Saudi royal family, who own the world’s largest oil company, Aramco, don’t want to wait any longer. Obama is the first US President to have seriously tried to carry out their long-desired «regime change» in Syria, so as to enable not only the Sauds’ Trans-Arabian Pipeline to be built, but also to build through Syria the Qatar-Turkey Gas Pipeline that the Thani royal family (friends of the Sauds) who own Qatar want also to be built there.
