The Power Of Trust; When Trust Is Lost, What Goes With It?

Everyone has a built in desire to trust. Trust but verify is one saying that is popular. What is trust? How does it work? Trust is built on common values, belief and reliability.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHY ARE YOU DOING IT? THEN COMES TRUST

Simon Sinek (@simonsinek) created a simple model, The Golden Circle, that codifies what makes the most inspiring people and organizations so successful and influential.  Simon takes the next step. After what and why comes : trust.

THE SPLIT IN AMERICA IS GROWING; DUE TO LOSS OF TRUST, CORRUPTION AND GREED

Simon talks about a split that is growing in America, as well as in companies. The ‘founders’ had a vision and a passion, but as the company or nation grows, the vision is lost, the passion is lost and a ‘split’ develops, with more and more people losing trust and hope.
America was ONE during the 1940’s, when everyone was loyal, pro American and willing to do whatever it took to for this nation to succeed and to win whatever war America was in, such as World War I and then II, for example.
But with each generation, that loyalty, trust and willingness to just serve in the military and do whatever someone said has left, more and more. The Vietnam war generated huge protests. The Iraq war split the nation, between the ‘believers’ and the people who saw that this war was built on fraud and greed. The split and the divide is growing as the curtain is pulled back and more people become aware of reality.

NOTHING CAN REPLACE THE POWER OF TRUST

Nothing can replace the trust built through human contact, smiling, shared values, and shared beliefs. Nothing.
This is what makes the difference between true leadership and top down authoritarians. Leadership tells everyone why we are here in the first place, and where we are going; with a vision. Authority tells us what to do, often with hidden ulterior motives that hurt people. Authority orders people to hurt or kill others, just because. 65 percent of people taken at random, are willing to kill another person or hurt them, just because the authority ordered them to. Their only concern after killing, is if they will get in trouble for doing it. Authority orders us around, and tells us what goal to achieve. Leadership inspires us to action from within, doing things that no one would believe possible.
As organizations and nations grow, the humanity tends to go away. With growth, contact with other people goes away. The empathy and compassion that is built on constant human interaction and communication goes away.  Technology actually puts barriers in the way of empathy, compassion, trust and friendship.

TRUE FRIENDS ARE NOT FACEBOOK LIKES OR AN EMAIL LIST OR CYBER CHATS

True friends are not facebook ‘likes’, or contacts in an email list. A true, trusted network is not created on LinkedIn or Facebook. A true conversation does not happen online via Twitter, in a chat room or in comment section on a huge newspaper site.

WHAT BUILDS TRUST, COMMUNITY AND RELATIONSHIPS?

Daily human experiences, interactions and direct face to face communication is what builds trust, and nothing else can do that. Technology only puts up screens and walls which blocks this interaction and roadblocks in the way of trusting others, by finding out what our shared values and beliefs are. Our neurons don’t light up when we are receiving IM or text messages. Trust is not built electronically.
Trust starts with a handshake, plus an intuitive feeling of kindness that cannot be duplicated via technology, and a smile.

THE POWER OF A SIMPLE HANDSHAKE AND SMILE

If someone meets you and agrees to do business 100% on your terms, but refuses to shake your hand, odds are you will back away and not do business with them. Technology is like that; as it has taken the handshake and smile out of human relationships, making the world a cold and sterile place. Trust is human to human CONTACT, feeling, and relationships that then generate trust. Without all of that, in a completely electronic world, what do people have? Nothing.
What the world needs is more direct one on one handshake based connection, leadership, and communication. Handshakes are only the first step of course, to developing trust. Trust is built on actions, where words are verified by actions. Trust is not just a one time email, or one handshake and then everything will be ok forever.

TECHNOLOGY AND TRUST

Technology does not build trust. TV does not build trust. Newspapers don’t build trust. Computers don’t build trust. Technology and computers only increase the speed of the disconnect between trust and where people REALLY are. Think about who you trust, and who you don’t trust.

WHO DO YOU TRUST?

TRUST IN MONEY AND BANKERS

TRUST IN STOCK MARKET
