If a person does not know anything about radiation, extreme tourism to nuclear sites may sound like a good idea. After all, everything looks normal, and it sounds cool, so why not visit a nuclear bomb test site, or a nuclear accident zone, such as Chernobyl, Fukushima or TMI?

The theory being promoted by these tour guides, governments and health agencies is that these very toxic, radioactive and hot particle filled sites are safe. Why? The ‘experts’ will talk about specifics that form the ‘hormesis’ theory. The hormesis theory has been debunked and is quack science.

Totem bomb site – Emu – Anne Beadell Highway.

Totem 1, and Totem 2 are the names given to the atomic bomb tests carried out October 1953 in the Australian ‘outback’. The location for these British/Australian run tests, chosen by ‘Len’ Beadell, became the camp at ‘Emu’, where the personnel were to be camped. The road needed to this site was the very first stage of the now ‘Anne Beadell Highway’ about 160 kilometres west from Coober Pedy.

The Totem sites are about 20 kilometres short of what once was the camp of ‘Emu’, the remoteness of the location giving some measure of safety and security for the testing of nuclear explosions. This remoteness proved it’s undoing however, and a new site was chosen at ‘Maralinga’ for further atomic tests to be conducted. The Totem sites, and the remains of the camp at Emu, with its surprisingly good airstrip have been left as an interesting side-trip on one’s journey along the Anne Beadell Highway.
